Violence against women in India refers to physical or sexual violence against Indian women. Most of these violent acts are committed by men or, in rare case:-s, a woman may also be involved. The most common forms of violence against Indian women are domestic abuse and sexual assault.
Types of violence against women :- There are many types of crimes that fall under the category of violence against women. Some of the most common forms of violence against women in India are listed below:
1) Sexual violence :- Sexual aggression for a woman refers to a situation where a person intentionally makes inappropriate physical contact with a woman without her consent or forces her to perform a sexual act. It is sexual violence and includes crimes such as rape, drug-induced sexual violence, child abuse and sexual molestation.
2) domestic violence :- Domestic violence against women takes place in a domestic environment. There are not many cases of domestic violence reported in India's patriarchal society. This includes physical abuse of a woman, in-laws, in husbands or relatives for her part. Social evils like dowry, gender inequality are mainly responsible for domestic violence against women.

The reason for violence against women in India.
1) Male-controlled Society :- Indian society is a male dominated society in which women do not have the right to make important family decisions. In addition, research showed that about 60% of men in India think that women in the family should be beaten periodically. This social configuration always keeps women in vulnerable positions.
2) Family Factors :- Domestic violence against a woman is a tendency to be transferred to the next generation. A child who sees his father physically abusing his mother when he grows up does the same to his wife. Nuclear families have reported more cases of violence against women, as there is no elderly person to intervene and resolve the issue.
3) Alcohol consumption :- Regular consumption of alcohol by the husband is the main cause of violence against women in the family. Alcohol is not only responsible for domestic violence against women, but also for crimes against women outside the home. Alcohol stimulates the cognitive abilities of the offender or victim, promoting violence.
Some of the main measures to prevent violence against women are listed below:
1) Greater Police Surveillance :- Police surveillance should be increased in all areas, especially in remote areas at night. The presence of police reduces the chances of assault or harassment of a woman on the way. Police officers should be deployed in crowded places like markets, as there is a high probability of crimes such as molesting or trying women.
2) Community Initiative :- Community-initiated initiatives to curb violence by women are the best way to combat domestic violence as well as other crimes against women. The Nari Adalat program launched in Uttar Pradesh by the Department of Education has proved to be important in reducing domestic violence against women.
3) safe transportation :- Many acts of sexual violence against women are carried out in trains or buses, mainly during late hours. Criminals take advantage of solitary vehicles and the absence of police personnel. There is a need to deploy at least one female police constable in late night buses or train coaches.
