If Love Is So Dangerous, Let's All Go To War

In India, recently we had so many 'honor killings' where unfortunate lovers who dared to defy met a bitter end. We have many castes and number of religions. Inter-caste and inter-religion marriages are still considered a taboo. These unfortunate lovers are often sacrificed on the altar of this 'honor'. This poem is in remembrance of these 'LOVERS'. This poem is also a protest against the taming of a thing, natural as love. THE KILLING and MAIMING SHOULD END.

Honor Killing Protest Poem

If love is so dangerous, let's all go to war!

Pray never say love, Pray never chant pyaar.*

This is the story of Pinky and her friend,

Killed coldly as they were, for an honor's end.

Pinki was the girl, and her friend was a boy,

He was no macho, she was no coy.

Simple as ever, as two souls had lived,

Carried on their lives, never had they cribbed.

Dimples on her cheeks, wit on his sleeves,

She liked his way, when he acted as 'Jeeves'.

So bewitching the looks, so enchanting the laughter,

Their hearts had met, and mirth came li'l after.

Their love was pure, their love was chaste,

Alas! They were but of different caste.

See as they say, and their saying goes fast,

Your hatred can linger, your love can't last.

Story goes ahead, and as a matter of fact,

Custodians of caste, caught them in the act.

What crime! What audacity! You love this man,

Your love, don't you know, sullied honor of your clan.

You criminals! You walk and talk with glee,

Nothing could they do, but hide, hush and flee.

To the town, by the road, from the village, as they went,

Their foes, on their toes, in the end, got their scent.

The Law and the People and the Police kept silent,

Had they acted with courage! Had they been bit valiant!

Honor was kept, lives were spent,

Slew them coldly, 'Twas honor with they went.

"Tis honor that we seek, and honor is our prayer,

If you don't fall in line, your father be your slayer."

Beware! You folks, love according to the laws,

Be ready, or else, crushed coldly in its paws.

So fools will remember, so fools may cry,

Like a dog, in the night, howling to sky.

If love is so dangerous, let's all go to war,

Pray never say love, Pray never chant pyaar.*

N.B:- * Pyaar is Hindi word for love.
