Are doctors really numb!!

Working as a doctor in the field of medicine might be lucrative, respectful and seemingly gives a higher status but it is also demanding, stressful and nerve wrecking at times. Being a doctor is not easy at all, especially in the country which is densely populated as work load is always high. In addition, people are too judgemental.

During OPD one of the patients was diagnosed with Covid. The doctor was comforting him and his relatives as they obviously panicked and were afraid of consequences. One of them was crying so  the doctor was trying to explain that the patient will be fine and rather than crying, just try to be positive and let the God cure him while he is being treated by the doctor. The patient was clearly distressed so she hardly listened to what doctor said but came back with a reply that doctors would never understand as they are too practical and hardly feel any sympathy. She further went on saying doctors would not cry as they are used to this game of life and death and nothing really startles them. The treating doctor was left amused and speechless but still went on to explain the disease and sent them with a smile on their face with assurance that patient is going to be fine. However, what patient told to the doctor was not true at all. Little did patients know that doctors cry too and they cry for those same reasons patients cry: Firstly they also love their near and dear ones as much as any other person and second they also fear losing them. It is just that doctors can manage their emotions well and do not show it to others what is going on inside.

Having said that, Doctors are also human and they also go through equally stressed roller coaster ride when one of their dear ones get sick. Doctors are not emotionally numb nor they lack empathy. But, society has premeditated thoughts about doctors being driven merely by money and them being too practical. Hopefully people would be less judgemental towards each other in near future and be more encouraging.
