The 'Good Governance Index' has been released by the 'Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances' and 'Centre for Good Governance', 'Ministry of Personnel and Public Grievances' on 25th of December 2019 which is celebrated as the 'Good Governance Day' in the memory of our former Prime Minister Mr 'Atal Bihari Vajpayee' as it is the day of his birth anniversary.

The objectives of celebrating the good governance day are as follows :-

1) To build a transparent and responsible administration,

2) To ensure welfare of common man,

3) To devise good and effective policies for good governance, and,

4) To give corruption free administration to the people.

In the good governance index, states have been divided into three categories : 1) Big States, 2) North East and Hill States and 3) Union Territories. In each category, the states have been ranked on the basis of the grading received in 10 different selected sectors. These sectors are as follows :-

1) Agriculture and Allied Industries

2) Commerce and Industries

3) Human Resource Development

4) Public Health

5) Public Infrastructure and Utilities

6) Economic Governance

7) Social Welfare and Development

8) Judicial and Public Security

9) Environment

10) Citizen Centric Governance

Each state an union territory has been marked over 50 indicators and each indicator has different weightage in different sector.

Under the category of 'Big States' 'Tamil Nadu' has topped the ranking among 18 big states followed by 'Maharashtra' and 'Karnataka' on the second and third positions respectively. Under the category of 'North East and Hill States' 'Himachal Pradesh' secured the first position followed by 'Uttarakhand' and 'Tripura' on the second and third positions respectively. Lastly, under the category of 'Union Territories' 'Pondicherry' has topped the ranking followed by 'Chandigarh' and 'Delhi' on the second and third positions respectively.
