अंतिम संस्कार : लकड़ी

यहाँ इस कहानी का सबसे छोटा और सधा हुआ सार (Summary) है: यह कहानी एक रिटायर्ड प्रोफेसर और उनके बचपन के दोस्त (एक पेड़) की मार्मिक विदाई है। सालों बाद गाँव लौटने पर प्रोफेसर को पता चलता है कि हाईवे बनने के कारण कल उस पेड़ को काट दिया जाएगा। पेड़ बिना किसी शिकायत के अपनी मौत को स्वीकारता है और प्रोफेसर से अपना 'अंतिम संस्कार' करने को कहता है। अंत में, प्रोफेसर उसे काटने की हिम्मत नहीं जुटा पाते। वे कुल्हाड़ी का लोहे वाला हिस्सा (जो मारने का प्रतीक है) वहीं छोड़ देते हैं और महज़ **लकड़ी का डंडा** अपने साथ ले आते हैं—ताकि उनका दोस्त हमेशा के लिए उनके साथ रह सके।
